A: Gamelan Dharma Swara, New York City's acclaimed Balinese ensemble, perform Joel Mellin's Synesthesia

B: Mayer/Kuehne/Molinaro perform Mara Mayer's graphical score with structured improvisation

A contemporary work for Balinese gamelan semara dana. Traditional Balinese compositional paradigms and performance techniques meld with and are juxtaposed with Western melodic structure, harmonic choices, and directed improvisation.

One sense informs another —automatically and involuntarily. Letters have color. A is orange and B is mauve. What's beyond Z? Numbers have distance. 2 is farther than 1 and 3 farther still. Tuesday is uncertain and Wednesday hopeful. One sense imbues another. Instruments together pass somber kinetic energy. A rest is a light breath with weight — heavy and pregnant. The gamelan is purple lava slowly reaching its boiling point. Synesthesia is not an affliction. It is a blessing.

Dapple Grey
A structured improvisation for cello, violin, and bass clarinet. Composed with a graphic score, images are added and removed during the performance to signal shifts in tonality and texture.

Do you hear what I see? I know, I've said it all before. You are music to my eyes, but it's not like that at all. This is music from my eyes—and it's just now coming into focus. You see, you think I'm on the straight and narrow, but this is a real game changer. I can't see straight so I bend it. I'll go this way. You go that way. Take a picture, this won't last long.
